The Irgunists motivation for the attack was in response to Operation Agatha which was a British military operation where soldiers and police arrested suspected Jewish terrorists in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem, as well as raiding the Jewish Agency confiscating large amounts of documents related to ongoing Zionist terror operations aimed against the British. A year later the MI6 foil an Irgun assassination plot aimed at British Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin, as well as other British Parliamentary members thought to be "anti-Semitic".
